Wow, I really thought Brian De Palma just did the broadest films - some a little bit violent like Scarface and Carrie and parts of The Untouchables - but I had no idea he had an interest in politically active filmmaking.

What are you talking about? What do you think Scarface is then?
PurushaDesa (August 28, 2008 at 11:09 am)
Yeah, yeah - it has a bit of 80s yuppie and American Dream commentary in there but it's still a pretty shallow film. Great fun, but not THAT much depth. It has the character arc of Shakespeare, but the aesthetics and plot of Miami Vice.

I agree to an extent. Its popculture VS critical thinking. I see nothing wrong with it, because sometimes thats the approach needed to reach a wider public. Not ALL people are politically conscious, especially the youth. This is a great way to influence them positively into thinking about the dilemmas/actualities at hand. But how can you say he doesnt make political movies? Have you even seen Casualties of War??
PurushaDesa (August 28, 2008 at 11:23 am)
Casualties of War is probably the only OVERTLY poliical movie I can think of, which is why I considered it more a breif flirtation with substance. The reference to it and Platoon's tagline didn't pass me by unnoticed. It's tagline was 'The first casualty of war is innocence'. The tagline of Redacted is 'Truth is the first casualty of war.' It seems like he's getting back to the filmmaker he wanted to be before the studio system chewed him up - which is great.

Excellent observation. I saddened that the movie made only 25,000$ in its FIRST WEEKEND at the box office. Can you imagine the infinite ignorance and stupidity of the general public? Its sickening how most people try to shake off what is happening over there, the atrocities these teenage monkeys are pulling over there. They just dont want to know about it. Just sad ;(

I keep bumping into Clockwork Orange fans, and they're consistently interesting to converse with.

you are completely right on the money. I am glad some one understands that we are completely at the mercy of Israeli interests, and innocent young American soldiers are dying because of it, not to mention the Arabs that are "collateral damage".
