And Now This... Media Ecology Association 5th Anniversary

Back

This video was prepared in 2003 in celebration of the Media Ecology Association's 5th Anniversary, and contains a special tribute to Neil Postman, who was the Guest of Honor at the event, which was held on September 4, 2003 at Fordham University (one month before he passed away). While celebratory in nature, the video also serves as a good introduction to the media ecology perspective, and Neil Postman's specific approach to the study of media as environments.

I read "The Disappearance of Childhood" years ago, and I never realized how relevant it would become for me as a teacher (in fact, I didn't put much stock in it). Perhaps it should have been titled "2004: A Teacher's Odyssey". The problems with this imbalance that Postman refered to in his book are magnified 1000-fold since it was first published. Now I truly understand!

Definitely a paucity of Postman posted.

Hey everybody - or the few people who watch vids like this one - this is one of only two videos featuring Neil Postman left on YT, after anticonsumer's account was closed by YT a week ago. If this matters to you, type "anticonsumer" and watch our videos.

Great to see Neil Postman, thanks for posting. He was and continues to be a large influence on my music video media critique "Thus Spoke The Spectacle," which I performed last year at NYU's Culture and Communications conference. I've uploaded one of my videos from the show directly influenced by him, "Now...This," for anyone interested in a music video interpretation of some of Professor Postman's ideas.
