This is how I perceive the song. Anytime a person sets a goal(s) for themselves there is the risk of failure. The higher the goal(s), the higher the chance for failure. Failure also can be looked at issues that are seem unbearable. For instance, when Jay discusses about his LOSS of someone close to him or his ending of his relationship with his girlfriend. He understands there will be these consequences. What Jay is sharing is the negative side of the dream.
