How does Simon and Garfunkel take the writing credit for this song?? The credit that they have on the album is for the arrangement of the song and the addition of the "Canticle" part (which is from an earlier Paul Simon song "The Side Of A Hill"). Sometimes the PUBLIC attributes the credit of the song to S&G (not the other way around) because some people are unaware of the song's origins and they just know the version by S&G.

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strands
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(On the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strands
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing of sparrow on snowcrested brown)
Without no seams nor needle work
(Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing of sparrow on snowcrested brown)
Without no seams nor needle work
(Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

lol. Simon and Garfunkel didn't write this song. It is an old Scott/Irish celtic song discussing the love a man has for a woman. And it is customary for the man to sprinkle these herbs in a womans hair to further express his affection for her.

There was a distinct dark ages thread of style in the hippy movement. I think this song is about drugs. When a person got lost in that world, they had went to a dark place, a fantasy world of flowers & romance, but not real. He's lost someone to that world. I don't look on the 60's with nostalgia, but rather with pain & remorse. We'll never recover. No one ever talks about casualties; many who didn't die wonder homeless all over America or languish in mental facilities. Who weeps for them?

Simon and Garfunkel always take the credit for "writing" this song. It is actually an old English poem.

I was born in the late 80s and I get the movie and understand the disconnect and uncertainty. Its a great movie with a amazing sound track.
