Trailer for Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita
BackPremieres Tuesday, January 15, 2008 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS.
Terra Incognita is a feature length documentary featuring the story of Dr. Jack Kessler, the current chair of Northwestern University's Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurological Sciences. When Kessler was invited to head up the Neurology Department at Northwestern, his focus was on using stem cells to help cure diabetes. However, soon after his move to Chicago, Allison -- then age 15, was injured in a skiing accident and paralyzed from the waist down. In the moments following the accident, Dr. Kessler made the decision to change the focus of his research to begin looking for a cure for spinal cord injuries using embryonic stem cells. Through Kessler's story, we bring the stem cell debate to the public for discussion. The film follows the constantly evolving interplay between the promise of new discoveries, the controversy of modern science and the resilience and courage of people living every day with devastating disease and injury.

This science can dramatically improve lives. Religion is nothing but an obstacle caused by people who or either stupid or desperate. It does nothing but cause problems. Stem Cell research is fantastic and should be used as much as possible. My mother has been paralyzed from the waist down when I was 10, I'm now 18. If sacrificing a fetus from a willing pregnant woman would allow my mother to walk again I would do it, no hesitation.

Well she's lucky to have a father who can support her...Emotionally and obviously financially! And not to sound like an ass but she was skiing...you don't ski if you're poor. So yeah...It's still terrible that the accident happened to her but lucky at the same time thanks to her father.

Other cells don't work and never have. What we need is the new law to pass that will use embryonic stem cells that will otherwise be flushed down the toilet. These are "in vetro" cells already made in a test tube and inserted into the mother. There are thousands and thousands of leftovers that don't get used and end up being flushed down the toilet. Let the new cells live and save lives. Let the new laws pass. Not to mention cures for cancer spinal cord injuries and a host of other ailments.

Rab - There are no cures coming from ESCR for cancer(in fact it causes tumors), spinal cord injuries nor a host of other ailments. However, there have been and are successful proceedures coming out of ASCR. Check it out.

What are you talking about. people everywhere travel to india to get embryonic stemcell treatment for several nervdisorders and spinalcord injuries. Have you been asleep for the last year or so?

Elev - Nice try! Show me the successes. Show me the Doctors who performed those successes. And finally, show all of us the papers the've written to prove their successes.

Just saw this show on TV. It had nothing to do with babies or embryo's in a females body. It's inseminate eggs in a test tube about a day or so old, no potential of being human life there.
