This song is very Thomas Pynchon. It's comparing the guy who built the Eiffel Tower to Alexander the Great.

Alexander the Great was the first guy who attempted a one-world government. To unify the world. That was his dream, and it is still the dream of Satan by the way. This is now happening again through technology and "aerodynamics." The Eiffel Tower represents the demonic phallic paganism that is really behind science... The obelisk of 2001.

Surfer Rosa and Doolittle have way more acessible (or pop, however you want to call it) songs than Trompe Le Monde. That's quite unusual, since alternative rock bands usually move towards a more acessible and radio-friendly sounding as times go by, and they did the otherwise.
