AYN RAND's message to the GOP CANDIDATES
BackEven more relevant than when she said it in 1961. Substitute "Islamists" for "Communists"
Hopefully, we will see in our lifetimes a realignment of the GOP in favor of reason and individual rights and away from faith and tradition. Religion is a private matter.
With the respective candidacies of Giuliani and Huckabee the split has become even more glaring: the pro-freedom Giuliani (pro-choice, socially liberal, capitalist, anti-regulation- who respects profit and achievement) vs the christian socialist Huckabee (pro-tradition, anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-reason, anti-capitalist, pro-regulation altruist)
Interestingly, in Rand's 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged (celebrating 50 years in publication) the President is the folksy "Mr. Thompson" - a deal-making insincere lobbyist type who believes anyone's open to a deal. Interesting coincidence that we have Fred Thompson this year, huh?

Read "Citizen Soldier" by Stephen Ambrose for accounts of the causes of the Civil War where the South used as a justification for slavery to bring Christianity to the "heathen" blacks and even Christian in Virginia passed a law saying if a slave accepted Christ he would win his freedom. Slaveholders banned the Bible and preachers from plantations. Virginia repealed the law figuring is better to be saved and be a slave than to be without the Word of God. Could be right.

Only the Lord knows for sure if those men had accepted Christ as their savior. However, it is clear that Lincoln and the others you mentions would be considered "do gooders" by today's crop of NEOCON conservatives. I am certain that their were many who fought for the Union who called upon the Lord on the battlefield for deliverance and victory. While the Confederates also worshipped God and quoted scripture such as you have, there is NO DOUBT that slavery in the America South was unholy.

I'd suggest a research project and an added class in critical thinking :) It's okay to be young, and we do eventually outgrow it.
Enjoy :)
Enjoy :)

I agree, Rand was a Pop Philosopher. She was also fairly regressive on issues like homosexuality and gender.

Oh, and the Confederates also thought they were fighting the Civil War on Christian principals, since in Leviticus 25:44-46 and Exodus 21:7-11 (among others) the Bible pretty clearly okays slavery and sex slavery. Then there's this little quote:
"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ."- (Ephesians 6:5), which put the "fear of the Lord" so to speak in generations of slaves who could have rebelled against their masters.

Actually Lincoln was not a Christian. Lincoln, Jefferson, and Andrew Johnson were the only presidents who weren't members of any Christian church. This is common knowledge and any detailed encyclopedia article on Lincoln would contain this fact. Lincoln quoted scripture in speech, but he just as often wrote statements like this one:
"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession"
"What is to be, will be, and no prayers of ours can arrest the decree".
"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession"
"What is to be, will be, and no prayers of ours can arrest the decree".

My,my. I really just wanted your take. I must admit, so much is lost in the translation of typing. My apologies if you feel as if I am waving a "bloody shirt".

Your view again supports evidence that the Republican party has been hijacked by...NEOCON ATHEISTS. The first Republican president, Lincoln, was a Christian and he fought the Civil War based partly on Christian principles. The NEOCONS are eager to again enslave Americans to their fascist causes and they hold the Christian right hostage with the hope of making abortion illegal. Christ, himself, did NOT work to change government but to change...SOULS. Today's Evangelicals are on the wrong path.

I'd say they are socialists for Israel

The republican party has been Hijacked. Obama is the lesser of two evils. At least he opposes the patriot act and other violations of basic civil rights. Mccain became republican main line. Someone who believes in Tradition and not American Ideals. He was supposed to be different. My country is going to be destroyed by both parties, still we must consider the lesser of two evils.
