U.S. Cyclists Defend Breathing Mask Use in Beijing Olympics

A third of the cyclists dropped out of the men's road race on 8/9/2008 blaming the suffocating and dirty air. Anticipating poor air quality, some of the U.S. Olympic cycling team arrived at Beijing airport wearing breathing masks and on August 12. The United States Olympic Committee has said that about one third of the USA team -- around 200 athletes -- had been issued with a breathing mask.

Has any been to a country that has a bad pollution problems? I've been to the Philippines and the air their is so bad. Wait till you go to a place with bad air; I'm pretty sure you'll drop out of a race just for those reasons.

Air quality? No no no no! if youre gonna win a medal in the olympics, you will win, no more alibis. If michael Phelps won 8 golds and did not need a mask, those four masked cyclist are just bunch of primadonas. Cut the alibis and dont blame the air quality.

It's too hot. It's too cold. The officials held us up. The air was too dirty. My underwear was too tight. My pillow was too soft. I didn't eat right. My coach yelled at me. My girlfriend and I broke up. The competition was cheating. They were too young. I was too tall. They were to pampered. I didn't get my Cheeze Wiz. Americans are too good? Americans are the best?
