Naomi Klein - The Shock Doctrine - Part 3 of 6

Back

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives ( presents:

Naomi Klein talks about her new book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Speaking at a benefit event for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, a social justice research institute.
Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America's "free market" policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

Every ideology takes advantage of a crisis, her argument is moot.

Klein twists her opponents words, misrepresents them, pours scorn and sarcasm on them and rebutts them with emotionally charged rhetoric.
Friedman was not talking about taking advantage of a crisis. He was calling it exactly how it is. When a crisis occurs any given society addresses that crisis with the ideas that are laying around, ideas that are either established through historical precedent, or championed as alternate theories. I'm a social democrat. Klein is an embarassment to the left.

In the long term, the economic model we are now useing in the western world, is squandering our natural wealth. By natural wealth I mean the biosphere that sustains us. It dies then we die.

Really? So you think the current economic model in the US / UK etc is working beautifully for all? The rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, have you even read the book?

I just read her book. It's all rhetoric. She doesn't even know what a neoconservative is. She interprets progress as greedy or evil. Private companies work efficiently. Private companies aren't afraid to fire excess workers. Corporations turned disasters into miracles. They saw opportunity from defeat.
The Iraq war is the most efficient war fought in history. In her opinion efficiency and greed is the same thing.
Carlinfan1 (August 29, 2008 at 10:12 pm)
Try starting with war is not effecient for humankind and work foward from there. Enron, Monsanto, Blackwater, lockheed martin are very effecient with regards to fraud, agent orange and bovine growth hormone, private armies cheaply hiring former death squad fighters from South America, making weapons and war is good business etc. etc. This is the state of our country, these businesses are booming.

Perhaps you would understand me if you actually read the book.
