What could cause such a catastrophe?

In the past Evolution has served as an intellectual basis for Hitler's Nazism, which resulted in a holocaust. Later it founded Marx's Communism. Yet the name of Charles Darwin is never mentioned alongside with Hitler. Even though Darwin was the "scientist" who directly inspired the German philosopher, Nietzsche; who in turn composed the superman theory and the Nazi corollary that some people were subhuman.

Hitler used this as an excuse to exterminate the Jewish people. The expression "natural selection," as applied to human beings, turns up at the Wannsee Conference in the prime document of the Holocaust.

Leading Nazis, and early 1900 influential German biologists, revealed in their writings that Darwin's theory and publications had a major influence upon Nazi race policies. Hitler believed that the human gene pool could be improved by using selective breeding similar to how farmers breed superior cattle strains. In the formulation of their racial policies, Hitler's government relied heavily upon Darwinism, especially the elaborations by Spencer and Haeckel. As a result, a central policy of Hitler's administration was the development and implementation of policies designed to protect the 'superior race'.

The belief that evolution can be directed by scientists to produce a 'superior race' was the central theme of Nazism.

Even so, many misdirected people have claimed that Hitler was a Christian and post his comments as they claimed he was doing Gods will. Quotes that came from his book he wrote while in prision. Seems everyone should realize he couldn't destroy the Christian churches outright, so he USED them.....also you have to examine Hitler's beliefs and works by comparing what he said and did, with the Biblical model for a legitimate Christian.

The forces of evil were unleashed in Nazi Germany because the cross of Christ had been replaced with the swastika. God is not mocked. At first many Germans christians were duped by the swastika being displayed alongside the cross. The cross on the Wartburg Castle was replaced by an immense floodlit swastika. In bowing to the swastika, the German christians turned their backs on the cross.

When Hitler mobilized his storm troopers, he used the swastika as its symbol. In his book Mein Kampf Hitler describes in the swastika a mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man. The swastika and the cross represent two entirely different ideas.
Swastika called for the blood of innocent people, the Christian cross does not. In the Nuremburg rally of 1934, it consisted of 35,000 swastikas..... NOT CROSSES

So If Hitler was a Christian, why would he plan to destroy the churches?

A senior member of the US prosecution team at Nuremberg, General William Donovan, compiled a huge amount of documentation that the Nazis planned to destroy German Christianity systematically— Donovan's documents were stored at Cornell University after his death in 1959, and are now being posted online at Rutgers Journal of Law and Religion. I hate what happened at the holocaust. People don't realise that the same is happening at the moment all over the world. Nobody ever wins.

i do agree with mortred.. some of them were just normal humans but they wanted to restore germany's strength to what it once was.. and so the were "pressured" into killing in such inhumane ways

Good that nazis were stupid enough to make so many pictures and films for evidence, we can view today. If they won the war, they would bury truth about holocaust and probably about one nation's extermination. Thank you PROCLAIMEROFTRUTH for uploading this.

We can't imagine what those people went through everday in death camps. It really was hell on earth. As one survived jew said, Auschwitz was place, God didn't visit. All we can do is remember, so we'll recognize evil next time. Auschwitz and others camps (without burned Bergen-Belsen from allies) are monuments of man's inhumanity to man.

Oh if they were at least shooted... But they were left starving to death (literally), for weeks and months, dying the slowest death, experiencing everday horror in death camps, some of them being guinea pigs for medical experiments performed on them and so on. Human inhumanity to human went too far here (just check stories about dr.Joseph Mengele - angel of death).

Of course history is gonna repeat it self. In fact it is right now, with the war we have going on in iraq.People are gonna look back and wonder why wouldnt anyone do anything about it,and of course we're all gonna say we didnt know. Of course we know we just wont do anything about.
