The truth is, The Black Cauldron was an extremely dark film when compared to most of their other movies. Plus it was a financial flop at the box office and Disney made very little effort to make tie-ins and merchandise based on their movie.

The movie was a condensed version of several of the books, taking the title of the second book in the series. The problem is, animation movie series of that scale are a rarity, and as we've seen from most Disney sequels, they aren't that good. BTW, the Black Cauldron came at a time when Disney was in somewhat of a financial jam and before the Disney Renaissance... which gave the rise of the kid friendly movies that most people think of when they think of disney.

I'm surprised they questioned the utility of the Black Cauldron! The Black Cauldron had the ability to bring forth an endless army of undead troops, and with those under the Horned King's command, nothing could stop him and he could take over the world. His current army wasn't strong enough for that.

Shame Siskel's dead and Ebert has cancer. At the Movies with Ebert and Roeper is now At the Movies with Roeper and a bunch of other critics.
