Keith Rowe - Prepared Guitar

Back

Legendary innovator, UK 'tabletop' guitarist Keith Rowe has explored the guitar as a primary source of pure sound, extending it with an array of objects and bric-a-brac, for more than 30 years. Keith Rowe is probably best known for his groundbreaking work with AMM and the SCRATCH ORCHESTRA. "Twanging ruler-shaped objects set off a cartoon style jiggling tremolo, a block of foam causes mountainous scuffling booms...A one man sound lab and dub studio formed out of a corner hardware shop.."[The Wire June 1999]

This kind of stuff is really fun to do. But I don't like to do what he does and potential hurt the guitar. I just think it's really cool, to just put your guitar in a low drop tuning, sit it down, turn every knob on your amp, and every knob on your effects all the way up, then just flick an open powerchord and play aimlessly with your effects. Wonderful.

I like some of the sounds but the whole "reflecting something about the world" talk is just too much...

Absolutely the most asinine thing I have ever watched.

It simply is noise!

Then you miss the point of it.

Its a reaction to popular music, the antagonist to the industry, and violates all that is called "music". Much as the surrealists did with art, who can say, what IS music. It is created for you to call it noise.

It is a load of bu((shite you are pedaling and trying to call it provocative. It's still an old man plinking at the strings with bits of rubbish and calling it music.

My dog's tail wagging against my Gibson ES 335 strings has more musicality then this tripe!

Life simply is noise. You walk down a city street, or you're in a crowded restaurant, you process sound much more cacophonous than this. If you were watching a film or some other engaging visual for which this sound was appropriate, you'd never realize it. People are capable of being seduced by sounds far more complex than you give them credit for. It's all in the context, friend.
