Gem Slaves: Tanzanite's child labour - Part - 1

Back

Mererani in northern Tanzania is the only place on earth where the precious stone tanzanite is mined. Every day thousands of children risk their lives in poorly constructed mine shafts for barely a meal a day. Despite efforts to curb this deadly practice, the global thirst for tanzanite continues to drive these children underground.

This video is imporant to see but also promotes a wrong viewing as well. I think that more local people should be involved with mining tanzanite, BUT this isnt like diamonds in Sierra Leone where people are slaves and funding helps rebel groups. These are people that want to make some extra money and go on their OWN FREE WILL to do so by risking mining for tanzanite. Thats no different than someone in North America going to the mountains and trying to find gold.

The problem with Africa is the same as other countries around the world, they are the victims of Capitalist societies, the big fish always eat the small.......
If the world money is fairly distributed, then, everybody will be equal, but some, doestn want to lose the stauts, one day, the world will be one, one planet under God, so im not worry, people are changing their way of thinking, thats my hope. God bless all the countries around the world.

Sad to say that Africa will ALWAYS be a basket case. Africans, as a rule (because of tribal/ethnic duty, corruption and nepotism) will never be able to rule themselves and prosper as Europe and North Americans have. Spending money on relief in Africa is a waste of time and money. The only way to help Africans is where they live. Finding ways to cheap, fresh water, better growing techniques, etc.

Clearly the Government doesnt care about its people, its not the gem lovers out there that should be blamed. The Tanzania government should ban kids from working, control the mine 100%, hire local ADULT works, give them a proper mine with correct venilation, tools, protection, and sell the rocks and put the money back into the economy. But for now thats a dream, maybe one day.

Poleni sana watoto mnaotumikishwa huko mererani.

Najua ni moja ya kundi la watoto wengi walio katika ajira mbaya ambazo zinazo wasababishia kushindwa kuendelea na elimu.

Time will tell..
