It was called that because the american censorship wouldn't let them call it that after an current event involving Police.. CENSORSHIP!!!!! hahhaa.

when it started is a different song. nyc cops was pulled from the first couple of pressings of the us album because it was right after 9/11. it was the band's choice, not censorship. they replaced it with when it started. later versions have both.

I kinda agree on this. Although The Strokes is not a bad band by any means, The White Stripes is just something else altogether. I mean, they were the only band that broke away from just being a part of the "The" bands that make up Garage Rock revival. They have the best catalog of them all too and it looks like Jack White is not stopping anytime soon.
