Yes Lou Reed was on heorin for a long time.
David Bowie tried to get him out of this, even buying for him equipment so that Lou Reed could keep on singing.
Berlin is the TOP of Lou Reed, with Rock and roll animals of course.
After that, he had to make a break for several years and tried to come back.
I don't think he suceeded...
But I still love his heroin's musics, such as perfect day from Berlin.

you're probably right. I don't know for sure when Lou was doing heroin. It's possible he flirted with it for awhile in the 60s, then let it drop, but not totally unlikely he was on and off til he finally really cleaned up. I know he was into pills (uppers/downers) in the 70s. Booze in the 80s. He doesn't seem to be speeding in this video...more like tuinal or reds if not heroin. Tho the lip licking (which I always saw as being his being really dissolute) could actually be from speed as you say.

husseochdoggen: The Bataclan is a "salle de spectacle" in the XIe arrondissement of Paris. It was built in 1864 by the architect Charles Duval. Its name refers to Ba-Ta-Clan, an operetta by Offenbach. That's from Wikipedia. There's a photo---pretty cool looking.
