Alas, organizing free thinkers is like trying to herd cats. The other problem is that, as a group, we are one of the easiest to closet, with no telling signs... it makes staying closeted (and thus safe and prosperous) very attractive and hard to give up.

Well said. And while I'm more of a Non-Theist than an Atheist, we are all part of a vast, steadily growing minority of Rational Minds that, while as you stated are the least trusted, is also one of largest. The last census put 16.3% of the pop. as Non-religious. For perspective; Blacks 13.5%. Hispanics (from all origins) 13.3%. Jews 1.7%. Hinduism, Buddhism, Wicca, and ALL "OTHER" RELIGIONS COMBINED <3%. It's time the reasonable people to stop being shy about it!

No, but the words of zealots make my feet tingle at the historic memory of burnings, and the bruises from the self righteous may have faded from my skin, but not my mind. Trust me, no matter what you think, the kid that abstains from prayer before the game, gets his preview of hell at the hands of the 'faithful'. As long as atheists have to hide to be elected, and god is in the pledge, there is protected prejudice.

I'm sorry, but looking for the good in everybody isn't going to negate their most prominent influence on the world if it's negative. I could look for the good in Vlad IV Tepes but that won't change the fact he tortured and killed 20,000 innocent people, despite his fervent Christianity. And NO. DNA evidence does not in anyway demonstrate the existence of a creator.
