Back

The United States won the 4x100-meter freestyle relay Monday, shattering the world record by nearly 4 seconds and giving Michael Phelps his second gold medal of the games. Jason Lezak swam the fastest anchor leg ever, overcoming a half-second deficit to edge out the French team by 0.08 seconds.

Typical. This commentator failed to mention that Sullivan set (at the time) a world record in the 100m free (leadoff swimmers can do that in relays) of 47.24 (later lowered to 47.05 by Sullivan in the semis of the individual). If it was an American who set the world record im sure this commentator would have spent 16 hours talking about it.

Carl Lewis was a long jumper than could run.He was never in Usain Bolt's league as a 100m sprinter.

What do you count as someone's league? You do realise Carl Lewis was Olympic champion and world record holder over 100m. Maybe if he was also from a country with no out of competition drug testing policy, he'd have been as fast as Bolt and Powell.

Carl Lewis was a drug cheat. The USOC covered it up as they covered up a lot of drug cheats.Ben Johnson's biggest crime was that he wasn't American. When Lewis broke the world record he only slightly lowered it.Bolt smashed it.Same with the 200M.Lewis only ever won the 200M once in the 84 boycott olympics and never held the world record.

Smashed? 0.02 & 0.03. If Ben Johnson was American now, he'd definitely get caught; if Jamaican, he could be on whatever he wanted.

Spitz, the 'z' makes the name that much cooler. Prooobably, it's a fair point but I'm somewhat inclined to say that swimming back then is almsot a different sport to now. Back then, Fly was just freestyle with 2 arms and Back was just freestyle on your back. With today's technology and research, Fly and Back are almost completely strokes; there are distinct fly specialists and backstroke specialists that probably can't really swim free

yeah true, good points all round

sorry about the 'z'
cmbandy (October 18, 2008 at 7:36 pm)
well then wouldn't that just mean that phelps is that much better than Spitz (w a "tz" btw) because he did more than Spitz?
